A few weeks ago I opened an email from my friend Steve, who works at the Lombardi Cancer Center and was doing the ride. I did the easy thing and clicked on "Donate" to put a modest amount in his fundraising bucket.
Then the other day I was in the basement looking at my new-to-me commuter bike. New-to-me in the sense that my friend Christian bequeathed it to me just before passing away earlier this year from -- well... cancer. It occurred to me that it would be nice to honor Christian by doing the ride on his bike. But then all the logistics started to nibble at me: how was I going to get down to the ride start at 7:30 in the morning, or more to the point, I was I going to wake up that early? And raising $1,000 in donations? Yikes...
But Christian lived a rich and wonderful life under the motto of "Just do stuff!" Which is to say, don't slow down and sweat the details, it'll all work out -- just get out there and try things. So I'm going to set my alarm for some ungodly hour, and get out there and ride 25 miles in Christian's honor.
Whether you knew Christian, or have your own friend or loved one who has battled cancer, or want to support cancer research, or just enjoy the idea of me having to crawl out of bed in the wee hours to do this, please donate!
