Jeff Ridenour's story

Just over twenty years ago, I sat in a tea stall in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, crying on the phone to my then-fiancée. I had just hit mile 90 of my first attempt at a century. I had only learned the day before that a "century" was a 100-mile bike ride when my friend had asked if I wanted to join him on one. I didn't finish.

In January 2023, just across the border from India in Bangladesh, I cried again as I spoke to my now-wife. During my annual checkup, I got blood work results that pointed to cancer. I was in Dhaka serving with the U.S. Department of State and was promptly sent to Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center for more tests. In March, I was formally diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and began treatment.

During this time, I also learned that around 50 years ago, my dad stood with tears in his eyes at the bedside of his father, who was fighting his last fight against the same type of cancer I had been diagnosed with.

I'm thankful that, since then, cancer treatment has come a long, long way. I never met my grandfather, and even though my cancer isn't curable yet, thanks to incredible advancements, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to see my grandchildren.

Last year, in the middle of my year-long cancer treatment, I completed my first century ride with Bellringer (see article - https://bellringer.org/resonance/100-miles-conquered/).

I'm excited to complete my second this October. Along this journey, I met some incredible people and am excited to meet more.

I hope you can join my team. I've committed to fundraising because life-saving cancer research makes a huge difference in the lives of those affected and their families and friends. I invite you to join me by donating to my effort and supporting this research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center."
