Danielle Aka's story

Two years ago, my family's life was forever changed by my dad's cancer diagnosis. After taking him to the hospital for what we thought was a minor problem, he was rushed into emergency surgery and was later diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. Since his diagnosis in March of 2024, he has gone in and out of remission multiple times. Today, he has a different form of cancer called Myelodisplastic Syndrome, which has irreversibly affected his bone marrow and DNA.
Despite diagnoses, prognoses, test results, and the heavy reality of our situation, he continues to live with a spirit of optimism and faith. He is truly inspiring. He has never stopped being a rock for our family, and I am endlessly proud of the way he continues to live life to the fullest, even though the future is unclear.
This will be my second year riding in the BellRinger fundraiser. It is a bike ride and year-round effort to end cancer, supported by a community of riders, virtual riders, volunteers, and donors working together to further our impact. I've committed again to a 25-mile ride to fundraise, and I invite you to join me by donating to support life-saving cancer research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
I know that so many of you have followed his journey and have supported our family in many ways through the ups and downs. Thank you to everyone who has and continues to support our family - and a special thank you to those who support this ride as we gear up to end cancer.
