I first learned about cancer at a young age, when my grandfather Barney was diagnosed. He ended up battling cancer for more than 15 years, and although he survived well into his 80's, cancer took a toll on his quality of life and kept him off the golf course for far too many years.
When I was in my 20's, my father Ernie was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and died less than a year later at age 58 - just a year after retiring from 30+ years of teaching. A few years later, I lost my favorite Aunt - Mary Lynne - to breast cancer. Four years after that, my mother Bonnie was treated for suspected lung cancer and eventually succumbed to the side effects of radiation therapy in 2015. Along the way countless friends and family members have had to go through similar trials.
On October 25th, just a couple of days after the 10-year anniversary of my mother's death, I will ride 62 miles through DC and Maryland with more than 700 other riders - together raising over a million dollars to fund cancer research. I ride with the spirit of my family, lost too soon. I ride with the hope that my daughter's generation will be spared the ravages of cancer.
BellRinger is a bike ride and a year-round effort to end cancer. Our movement is motivated by a community of Riders, Virtual Riders, volunteers, and donors working together to further our impact. I've made a commitment to fundraising, and I invite you to join me by donating to my effort and supporting life-saving cancer research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.
